Riccia fluitans
Riccia fluitans is a bright green, delicate liverwort with fine, branching fronds that form soft, cushion-like mats. Known for its light, airy texture, it creates a fresh, natural look in planted environments. While commonly seen floating in aquariums, it can also adapt to emersed growth in very humid conditions, where it forms dense, velvety carpets—making it suitable for moist terrariums and paludariums.
Terrarium (Emersed) Care
Substrate: Does not require nutrient-rich substrate; it can grow attached to rocks, wood, or mesh over moist surfaces. A consistently damp base is more important than soil nutrients.
Humidity: 80–100%, thrives in very high humidity; best for closed terrariums
Light: Medium to bright indirect light to maintain compact, healthy growth
Water: Keep constantly moist; it must not dry out even briefly
Temperature: 20–26°C
Riccia can dry quickly in open air, so stable humidity is essential. Regular misting and good moisture retention will help it form a lush, bright green mat in emersed terrarium conditions.
